“The Multicultural Services Centre of WA is unable to help large numbers of migrants and refuges who contact the agency seeking support to find housing. Recognising that the public housing is not a realistic option, the private rental market is experiencing the highest rents and lowest vacancy rates in many years and that migration to WA is steadily increasing;
- Nearly 90% of homeless people presenting to emergency and crisis accommodation services are turned away each night
- Perth Rental Crisis – a recent Anglicare study revealed that of the 3210 properties advertised to rent on Saturday 14 April in greater metropolitan Perth (including Mandurah), none were affordable for single people or couples whose only income was a Centrelink payment. The only affordable option out of those 3210 ‘to let’ was 40 share-house advertisements, and only then were they affordable to a couple on an Age Pension or a single person on a Disability Support Pension.
- In Perth it is a situation of nowhere to live, not enough money to live on and no help available no matter who you are.
MSCWA is trialling a Multicultural Home-share Service where people with spare rooms can be linked to people desperately in need of affordable housing.”
